MSA Super 1 Series
Round 4 - Larkhall - 18th June
2006
Formula A
Championship closes up at Larkhall
Chris Rogers (Waltham Cross, Herts) stormed his way through the Renault Formula A finals at the B4 Super One kart meeting at Larkhall (Lanarkshire) on Sunday (18th June), but later received a 10 second penalty for jumping the start of the second final. Rogers took the lead of the second final at the start and held the position to the flag, but was later handed the ten-second time penalty, dropping him to fifth. He is appealing against the penalty to the Motor Sports Association.
He had earlier started the first of two finals which earn points in the Renault sponsored Formula A championship in 14th place. By the second lap of the 20 lap race he had already climbed to seventh place, then spent the next 11 laps working his way through the hard fought top six battle. He reached second position by lap 13, but was unable to do anything about pole man Riki Christodoulou (Sutton Coldfield), who had opened up a comfortable lead early on in the race.
After Rogers took the lead from Riki at the start of the second final, Christodoulou initially fought back, but then dropped into the clutches of reigning champion Mark Litchfield (Heage, Derbyshire), who climbed from ninth on the grid to fourth. The pair had a race long battle for third place. “Mark was quicker than me on some parts of the circuit, but in other places, like the hairpins, I was quicker,” said Christodoulou. He eventually made the move stick with just two laps to go.
Litchfield retained his championship lead with ninth and fourth place finishes in the two finals, but after Rogers’ penalty promoted rival Jason Parrott (Crowland, Peterborough) to first place in the second final, the gap between Litchfield and Parrott is just five points with four races to go – reigniting the championship battle.
Parrott started the first final back in 17th place but climbed as high as third, battling Tom Armour (Billericay) and Danny Cruttenden (Dartford), before dropping to seventh place with three laps to go. Parrott’s improving pace delivered in the second final however, as he quickly worked his way up from seventh on the grid to take a comfortable second place on the track behind Rogers, whose penalty gave Parrott an on paper victory.
Leading female contender Tiffany Chittenden (Chiselhurst, Kent) continued her karting campaign at Larkhall having secured a seat for three races in the Formula Renault with Michelin championship. Her first Formula Renault race with Macob Motorsport will be at Croft on 16th July. Contact from a rival sent Chittenden off track and down to 15th place in the first final, she recovered to finish the first race 14th and the second final in 11th.
Renault Formula A Championship provisional points: 1st – Mark Litchfield 375pts; 2nd – Jason Parrott 370pts; 3rd – Danny Cruttenden 330pts; 4th – Jamie Croxford Gary Catt 329pts; 5th– Chris Rogers 326pts; 6th – Riki Christodoulou 311pts.
Formula ICA
Rivals fail to get
Carter at Larkhall
Promising racer Shaun Carter (Crowthorne, Berks) scored his first race wins in the Renault sponsored Formula ICA B4 Super One kart championship on Sunday (18th June). Carter, 18, drove two excellent races in both championship points scoring finals at the series’ annual Scottish meeting held at Larkhall in Lanarkshire.
He started the first final in third place and used Larkhall’s hairpins to pass Raymie Eastwood (Belfast) and Matt Truelove (Lincoln) in quick succession on laps seven and eight, before opening a clear lead. The win earned Carter a pole position for final two and he led the 20-lap race to the chequered flag. Despite some strong race performances, Shaun’s previous best result in Renault Formula ICA was seventh. “It’s all come good for me,” said Shaun after the race. “I like the track at Larkhall, I’ve only been here a few times, but I’ve always done well. The series is the toughest I’ve ever competed in so I’m delighted to win two races.” The wins put Carter in the top six of the championship.
Meanwhile, seasoned campaigner Jason Edgar enjoyed a revival in form at Larkhall, after a run of problems in previous races. His first final started badly when he dropped from 10th on the grid to 19th at the start when his engine cut out on the rolling up lap. A storming drive through the field brought him up to third by the end of the race, behind Lee Bell (High Wycombe) who battled with Stefan Di Resta and Matt Truelove in race one.
Bell, who finished fourth in the second final, is second in the ICA championship, behind Ollie Millroy (Claygate, Surrey) who missed testing on the opening day of the meeting to take GCSE exams, and was off his normal pace during the weekend. He finished ninth and seventh in the finals, but three wins and three podium finishes earlier in the season ensured he remained in comfortable lead of the championship.
Scott Malvern (Ilford) – a Formula Renault hopeful – also missed the Friday testing because of A level study commitments, but performed well in the finals, finishing seventh and fifth in the two points-scoring races.
Renault Formula ICA Championship provisional points: 1st – Ollie Millroy 372pts; 2nd – Lee Bell 335pts; 3rd – Jason Edgar 326pts; 4th – Matt Truelove 313pts; 5th – Jonathan Walker 311pts; 6th – Shaun Carter 310pts.
Formula JICA
Four in a row for
rising star Harvey
Jack Harvey (Bassingham, Lincolnshire) proved his first Renault Formula JICA win was no fluke when he repeated the feat at Larkhall on 18th June.
Harvey scored two race victories at the Lanarkshire circuit in the B4 Group Super One championship, to go with the two wins he clinched on his home track, PFI near Newark, in May. Four wins in a row put him in the lead of the Renault sponsored Formula JICA series.
The 13 year-old’s first win came in very wet conditions at PFI and it was raining again at Larkhall when he continued his successful streak. The win in final one at PFI earned Harvey double points when the second race was cancelled because of poor weather conditions. At Larkhall there were no such problems, and Harvey led both races from pole position to the chequered flag. In the first final Anthony Moss (Middle Barton, Oxon) underlined his potential, climbing from sixth on the grid to second place at the end.
Tom Joiner (Braintree) was third in the first final and fourth in the second championship race, while Wayne Boyd (Newtonabbey) made his mark on the podium in the second final, moving from sixth on the grid to second at the end of the race.
Richard Bradley (Blackheath) put in another gutsy performance, running as high a third in Final one, but dropped back after a spin, wasting his fourth place grid position. He started final two in 29th place, and climbed to 10th by the end of the 20-lap race.
Oliver Rowland (Penistone, S Yorks) had his worst weekend of the season so far, dropping from 11th on the grid to 22nd in final one. He made a strong comeback in the second final reaching fifth place, before Jordan Chamberlain (Newport) pinched the position from him with five laps to go.
Renault Formula JICA Championship provisional points: 1st – Jack Harvey 364pts; 2nd – Oliver Rowland 347pts; 3rd – Jordan Chamberlain 344pts; 4th – Gary Thompson – 309pts; 5th – Richard Bradley 303pts; 6th – Robert Butler 279pts.
