Formula A
Litchfield reigns at soaked PFI
Atrocious weather conditions brought the B4 Super One kart championship meeting to an early close at PFI circuit near Newark, Lincolnshire, on Sunday (21st May), but not before reigning Formula A champion Mark Litchfield extended his lead in the Renault backed series.
Litchfield (Ashbourne, Derbyshire) cruised to victory in a wet Final One, and unfazed by the changing weather conditions, was confident of repeating the win in the second final. But after the circuit became waterlogged following a torrential downpour, officials halted the event in the interests of safety with three races to go – including the second Renault Formula A final.
Competitors were awarded double points for the completed Final One, meaning Litchfield scored a maximum 100 points for the weekend, extending his championship lead. He said: “Although I got maximum points and it couldn’t be better for the championship, I’m disappointed I didn’t get to race again.”
Championship rival Jason Parrott (Peterborough) finished 3.5 seconds behind Litchfield. He initially struggled with the set up of his kart, allowing Litchfield to open a comfortable lead. “I would have gone faster in the second final,” said Parrott. “I let some air out of the tyres for the first final. It wasn’t so good to begin with, but it got better and better. I was in sight of Mark and my times were close to his at the end.”
Jamie Croxford (Wotton Fields, Northants) put in another strong performance, winning the first Renault Formula A heat at PFI. He started the final alongside Litchfield on the front row of the grid, but was pipped by Parrott at the start, running in third place to the flag. The result, following on from a strong race at the previous round, consolidated Croxford’s third place position in the championship.
Riki Christodoulou (Sutton Coldfield) was one of the drivers worst affected by the early conclusion of the event. He moved up from 7th on the grid to run in 4th place in the first final, but retired after 10 laps with a mechanical failure – taking no points from the race meeting.
Renault Formula A Championship provisional points: 1st – Mark Litchfield 290pts; 2nd – Jason Parrott 279pts; 3rd – Jamie Croxford 263pts; 4th – Gary Catt 248pts; 5th – Danny Cruttenden 243pts; 6th Chris Rogers 234pts.
Formula ICA
Millroy doubles up
on wet weather success
Soaking track conditions and unpredictable rain showers made for an eventful final in the Renault Formula ICA kart championship at PFI circuit near Newark, Lincolnshire, on Sunday (21st May).
Championship leader Ollie Millroy (Claygate, Surrey) moved from 7th place on the grid to win the first Formula ICA final, then had his points doubled when the second final was cancelled because of deteriorating weather conditions. Millroy said: “I had a great start and moved up to fourth place quite quickly. A few laps later I was catching Adam Batch when he disappeared.” Although the damp track conditions had posed a bit of a challenge in the heat races, the wet weather came to Millroy’s aid in the final. “The water pump belt snapped so the engine was running at 110 degrees. I had to keep driving through puddles to keep it cool. If hadn’t been raining it would have seized.”
Adam Batch (North Ferriby, Yorkshire) was probably most disappointed by the weekend’s early finish. He scored a pole position in the first ICA heat, with older brother David on the front row of ICA heat two. Adam led most of the Renault Formula ICA final until an error under braking in the tricky conditions sent him off the track. He finished the race in 20th place and with no chance to improve in a second final his championship hopes were dashed.
Tristram Oman (Stockton-on-Tees) had a strong weekend, winning two of the ICA heats to line up on pole position for the first final. He was passed by Batch at the start of the race and was then challenged by Millroy and Jonathan Walker in the race, eventually finishing third. His results elevated him to fourth in the championship standings at the half-way point of the season.
Walker (Dinkley, Lancashire) made a remarkable climb from 11th on the grid to finish second, holding onto second place in the championship, while Stefan Wilson (Sheffield) climbed from 12th to finish fourth. Further down the field, Scott Malvern (Ilford) climbed from 30th on the grid to finish 16th.
Lee Bell (High Wycombe) is currently third in the Renault Formula ICA championship, after a difficult race, which saw him drop from a 6th on the grid to 8th at the end of the race.
Renault Formula ICA Championship provisional points: 1st – Ollie Millroy 292pts; 2nd – Jonathan Walker 249pts; 3rd – Lee Bell 245pts; 4th Tristram Oman 241pts; 5th – Jason Edgar 234pts; 6th – Matt Truelove 225pts.
Formula JICA
Local karter takes
rainy victory at PFI
Jack Harvey (Bassingham, Lincolnshire) scored his first Renault Formula JICA victory at his local circuit – PFI near Newark – on Sunday (21st May).
Although he started the championship-points scoring final from pole position the 13 year-old only secured the win on the final lap of the 25 lap race. Oliver Rowland (Penistone, S Yorkshire) proved a constant danger, taking advantage of the slippery conditions to pull alongside Harvey. The pair raced side-by-side between PFI’s hairpins several times in the opening laps, with Rowland taking control in the middle part of the race.
Harvey slipped to third place on lap six, behind a hard-charging Tom Patterson (Newchapel, Surrey), but Harvey mounted a comeback on lap 10. After passing Patterson he watched Rowland run wide at the hairpin several times before making a successful challenge for the lead on lap 13. Rowland had not given up on the lead however, and repassed Harvey on the final lap, only to run wide across the grass, slipping to third by the end.
Harvey’s success was doubly rewarded when the second points scoring final was abandoned following a start-line accident. Deteriorating weather conditions meant the Super One meeting was halted early with three races still to go, with double points awarded for the completed finals.
Harvey was delighted with his victory and confident he would have been able to repeat his victory if the second final had been run. Apart from a mechanical failure at Shenington, his results have steadily improved during what is his first season of karting in Renault Formula JICA and he is currently third in the championship at the half-way point of the season.
Jordan Chamberlain (Newport) was unable to repeat his commanding performance in the previous round of the Renault Formula JICA championship, but just managed to cling to his series lead. Chamberlain started and finished the sole final in 5th place although he had won a heat earlier in the day. He leads Oliver Rowland in the Renault Formula JICA Championship by just a single point with six points-scoring races in the B4 Super One kart series to go.
Renault Formula JICA Championship provisional points: 1st – Jordan Chamberlain 280pts; 2nd – Oliver Rowland 279pts; 3rd – Jack Harvey 264pts; 4th – Scott Jenkins – 255pts; 5th – Richard Bradley 246pts; 6th – Gary Thompson 242pts.
