Latest Decisions of the CIK-FIA - December 2003

LATEST DECISIONS OF THE WORLD MOTOR SPORT COUNCIL OF THE FIA REGARDING KARTING.

During its meeting on 12 December 2003 in Monaco, the World Motor Sport Council of the FIA analysed an investigation into the current problems in Karting, conducted by Mr Marco Piccinini (Deputy President of the FIA Sport) and Mr David Ward (FIA Consultant). The major recommendations adopted by the World Motor Sport Council are the following ones:
a) to licence the media rights to the CIK-FIA championships back to the organisers in 2004;
b) to reconfirm the existing CIK-FIA policy aim of completing a total transfer from 2-stroke to 4-stroke engines systems, but to review the timescale of this change;
c) to delay the introduction of the CIK-FIA 4-stroke World Championship to 2006 at earliest, in conjunction with the application of fuel injection and catalyst technologies;
d) to seek to positively contribute to the European Commission’s forthcoming report on recreational engines (including karts) and, therefore, anticipate any regulatory requirements;
e) to adopt a single cylinder regulation for the proposed CIK-FIA 4-stroke engines;
f) to adopt from 2005 a single engine/chassis per event rule;
g) that strong support continues to be given to the World Kart Formula by the CIK-FIA and by ASNs worldwide;
A number of other matters are still under discussions and final decisions will be announced after the World Motor Sport Council of 24 March 2004.

LATEST DECISIONS OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE AND PLENARY CONFERENCE OF THE CIK-FIA.

During their meetings on 13 December 2003 in Monaco, both the Executive Committee and Plenary Conference of the CIK-FIA took the following decisions:
a) owing to the delay in introducing CIK-FIA 4-stroke engines, the CIK-FIA 4-stroke Trophy, scheduled to take place in Braga/P on 20-22 August 2004, is cancelled;
b) the obligation for the top 12 drivers in the final classification of the ICC European Championship to move to the Super-ICC category the following year is henceforth limited to the top 6 only;
c) seven new countries have now joined the CIK-FIA, through their respectives ASNs or clubs; Armenia (Karting Federation of Armenia), Egypt (Automobile & Touring Club of Egypt), Ivory Coast (Fédération Ivoirienne de Sport Automobile), Macedonia (Auto-Moto Association of Macedonia), Oman (Oman Automobile Association), Qatar (Qatar Motor Federation) and Syria (Automobile Club de Syrie);
d) two new karting zones have been created : the South-East European Zone for Karting (composed of Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine) and the Middle East Zone for Karting (composed of Bahrain, Cyprus, Kuwait, Oman, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and, under reserve, Egypt and Qatar).
