Pro-Kart Endurance Championship
Round 2 - Glan y Gors Park - 2nd April 2006
GYG Pro-Kart Endurance Championship second round on the 2nd April started after a longer than usual gap from the first. With a chill in the air and the promise of the usual April showers it was going to make challenging conditions for the 12 teams entered for the 160 Class.
No surprises from qualifying for the front row, which saw Datum Racing take pole with GKD 66 in second position. On the second row sat MBC Racing (No 53 Herbie) and NGR Racing who appeared keen to challenge the top teams.
The pressure was on from the start and after two laps GKD 66, NGR and Datum remained in the top three, but MBC were lost to the back of the grid and if they were intent on making a serious challenge had suddenly left them selves with a lot of ground to make up. Teams Ultima, Mizzi, Trailvan and SAS (newcomers) were up with running for the first 30 minutes of the 4 hour race, with Ultima claiming third position from Datum. After a quarter of the course completed Teams Crisis and Ecolab began to work their way up through the field. On lap 64, GKD 66 was leading NGR Racing by 0:00.99 seconds and NGR were producing faster laps. Were the masters to be challenged today?
Before the half way stage Turning Heads had worked up to 7th position behind Ecolab, which they maintained for almost an hour. Ecolab were to briefly jump to 4th with the MBC boys in 5th and Ultima remained steady in the top six positions not losing or gaining much on the front runners. Mizzi Racing began dropping down the pack with problems and was to find it difficult to make up lost time. The battle at the front was to remain between GKD 66, NGR and Datum, with the two front runners still on the same lap after 2 hours and 45 minutes of racing and Datum one lap behind. NGR edged ahead briefly 1 hour from the chequered, but Datum had decided they had sat in the wings long enough and made a move on the first place with 30 minutes to go, which they were not going to give up to GKD or NGR.
With 6 minutes to go a serious attempt from MBC on NGR was on for the third trophy place, with a gap of 0:03.45 seconds and lapping slightly faster. The MBC Racing boys were to produce an exciting last lap finish taking third place from NGR. What a come back from dropping to last position at the start of the race – Herbie does it again.
