The 2003 Open Endurance Championship
Round 6 -
10th August
Daytona Milton Keynes
Another good turnout and a scorching hot day, greeted the teams, for this the 6th round of the Championship. Numbers were further boosted by the inclusion into the series, of the World Engine powered formula, with representation from two immaculately presented karts from Zoom.
Qualifying resulted in a Max/Biland front row, courtesy of Auctionmyigloo and SRT with the Max of Special Racing Projects and Tecserve’s Extreme, making up the second row.
Auctionmyigloo stormed of into the lead, but alas just 12 laps into the race, the throttle cable failed dropping them to the back of the field. The 7-lap advantage for the Pro’s and the World Engine class was then implemented, showing the top six as follows; Zoom 2, Zoom1, Grassroots, Chains of Thunder, IMP Racing and The Red Brigade.
Within the first hour, the temperatures began to sore to unacceptable heights, contributing to a number of failures including punctures for both Imp Racing and Chains of Thunder, and yet another throttle cable failure for Auctionmyigloo. This left the leader board looking good for both the Zoom karts with Grassroots still in 3rd and Blue Thunder along with The Red Brigade, progressively eating into their lead.
The varying array of fuel stop requirements, made it difficult to see who was going forwards and who wasn’t, but clearly Blue Thunder were catching Zoom 2 and Special Racing Projects were catching both of them. Conversely SRT were having a hound of a day, RJB weren’t doing much better and Grassroots were forced to make an unscheduled stop dropping them back to twelfth place.
With the halfway stage now reached, both the Extreme of APH and the Thunderkart of Bad News had quietly made their way up into the top six, The Red Brigade were now fourth and Blue Thunder and Special Racing Projects were now vying for the lead having, displaced Zoom 2 down to third place.
With an hour to go, OneStopMotorsport had moved in to semi-retirement, during a day not worth remembering, Blue Thunder took the lead whilst Special Racing Projects fuelled and Zoom 2 were being hunted down by APH, Bad News, RJB and MV Kelly. With half an hour remaining APH made a late fuel stop, Bad News and RJB displaced Zoom 2 and the economy of Blue Thunder was set to out-run the fast finishing Max of Special Racing Projects. With the chequered flag almost in sight, Blue Thunder’s long last stint would pay dividends; Special Racing Projects would cruise home to a safe second and Bad News just got the better of RJB to conclude another excellent days racing.
